Texas Native Thorny Shrub Bird Friendly Drought Tolerant
About This Plant

Granjeno, also known as Spiny Hackberry, is a tough native shrub that forms dense, thorny thickets along the Woodland Trail. Its small orange-red berries ripen in fall and are a critical food source for dozens of bird species during migration season in the Rio Grande Valley.

Despite its fierce thorns, Granjeno is one of the most wildlife-friendly plants at VNC — providing shelter, food, and nesting sites for a remarkable variety of species.

Did You Know?

Granjeno berries are so rich in sugar and nutrients that migrating birds will travel hundreds of miles to find stands of this shrub during their fall journey through the RGV.
