Texas Native Purple Blooms Drought Tolerant Barometer Bush Xeriscape
About This Plant

Cenizo, also known as Texas Sage or Purple Sage, is one of the most beloved native shrubs of South Texas — famous for its silvery-gray foliage and the sudden appearance of vivid purple-pink flowers following rainfall. This behavior earned it the nickname 'Barometer Bush' because locals use it to predict rain.

When humidity rises before a storm, Cenizo responds within hours by bursting into bloom. A hillside of blooming Cenizo after a summer rain is one of the most spectacular sights in South Texas.

Did You Know?

Cenizo is so reliable at blooming before rain that ranchers in South Texas have used it as a weather predictor for generations — when the Cenizo blooms, rain is typically coming within 48 hours.
